Bak has an active Social Studies Department. Throughout the middle school years students will study Ancient Civilizations, Civics and Careers and United States history. Our teachers are dedicated to the success of our students.  Although social studies is not FCAT tested, our department uses instructional methods to support the tested academics.
Five of our twelve-member Social Studies Department are National Board Certified Teachers. One of our teachers was Palm Beach County

Outstanding Social Studies Teacher of the Year 2002-2003.  Our teachers participate in educational opportunities whenever possible including:

the ‘Teaching American History’ grant program;
the Williamsburg Teacher Institute;
the Project Citizen Institute;
the Florida  Justice Teaching Institute;
the We the People Institute;
the National Black Child Development Institute;
workshop for teaching Pre-AP from the College Board;
the National Conference on Economics Education;
publish lesson plans;
serve on the Palm Beach Social Studies Curriculum Writing team;
field test lessons for the Council for Economic Education;
work on the Palm Beach County Textbook Adoption Committee;
participate in the March of the Educators tour of Poland and Germany;
mentor beginning Palm Beach County teachers as well as those in the Alternative Certification Program;
supervise college interns;
supervise school programs such as Course Recovery and Curtain Calls;
participate in The Palm Beach County Bar Association’s Law Week and their Lincoln Poster contest, and 
sponsor activities such as Student Government Association, Academic Games, and History Fair.

Additionally, we enhance our students learning opportunities by participating in:

the ‘Do the Write Thing’ Essay Challenge against violence;
simulations of ancient civilizations, including wearing of cultural garb, listening to traditional music, recreating cultural arts, studying origins of world religions and writing, acting out scenes in plays, and holding and examining items from those cultures;
the creation of dream pieces, culminating term performances through extensive research ;
the sharing of photos and souvenirs from other civilizations;
the awareness of national holidays;
special projects, such as support for the U. S. military overseas and veterans;
collections after natural disasters for Palm Beach County families and  other countries;
mock presidential and congressional elections; 
the Stock Market Game;
the InvestWrite Essay Contest;
the Justice Teaching Student Program;
the Palm Beach County Law Education program; and
we invite a variety of speakers to enrich our curriculum.

Through Social Studies our students have won many local, state and national awards in the: 

Florida State National History Day;
Social Studies Academic Games;
Do the Write Thing Essay Contest; 
The Investwrite Essay Contest (national and state winners); and
National Geographic Society Geography Bee
